Children in our parish attend worship and Children’s Chapel, participate in Virtual Sunday School classes, and do so much more. Of course, they lead our annual Christmas Pageant, but they also lead us in our annual Soup-er bowl to collect cans of soup for our local food pantry. Children also participate in other Outreach ministries – most particularly, they come with their parents to help prepare food to go out on our monthly food truck runs.
In September of 2019, we recognized the families might not have the time to come to worship and then stay for Sunday School classes. So we introducted Virtual Sunday School. During the program year (October through mid-June) links are regularly sent out via our weekly email. Classes are led by “Cartoon Vicar Joan” and there are also Storytime videos feature stories read and reflected on by our Sunday School teachers. Of course, this program was particularly helpful during the Covid years!
During worship, children participate as acolytes and lectors, and once they are Confirmed, our teens can participate as Lay Eucharistic Ministers. At the 9:30 service, we offer “Children’s Chapel” from the beginning of the service through the sermon. Young children are invited but never required to follow the leader into the Parish Hall to hear and engage with the readings at an age-appropriate level.
